Compact Apama ROV: Redesigning Net Repair Systems for Global Aquaculture Applications

Background

In adapting the Apama ROV for Norway, Southern Ocean Subsea (SoSub) faced a key challenge size and weight. Norwegian net repair requirements required a lighter, more versatile vehicle.

Solution

Lead R&D engineer Kelsey Southern Ocean Subsea (SoSub) redesigned the Apama ROV as a Compact model with modular tooling, lighter frame, and quick-swap systems, through our implementation of Industry 4.0 practices. These changes allowed rapid deployment and easy maintenance while maintaining strength and stability.

Results

  • The redesigned compact ROV allows for single-person operation, reducing crew costs and increasing deployment speed.
  • Improved efficiency for smaller boats
  • Improved video transmission and operational reliability, even in challenging weather conditions.
  • Created a benchmark design adaptable to other aquaculture regions (Scotland, Iceland)
“Norway’s skepticism demanded proof. The Compact Apama proved that subsea reliability and remote precision can outperform traditional repairs.”— Kelsey, Southern Ocean Subsea Pty Ltd
